The Subaru XV (Mk2/GT, 2017–2022) — sold as the Crosstrek in some markets — uses Keyless Access with push-button start, and the START/STOP button itself reads the fob’s chip at close range. When the access key fob battery dies, hold the fob to the button and the GT XV starts as normal.
Start the GT XV with a dead fob
- Let yourself in with the emergency key first (next section), then sit in the driver’s seat and shut the door.
- Press and hold the brake pedal.
- Hold the access key fob directly against the push-button START/STOP switch and keep it there — the back-up reader coil is inside the button.
- With the fob still pressed to the button, push the button. The chip is energised inductively and the engine fires.
If the display shows the key is not detected, press the fob flat and square against the button and retry — the read range is only about a centimetre.
Unlock the GT XV with the emergency key
- Hold the small release button on the back of the access key fob and slide the metal emergency key out.
- At the driver’s door handle, insert the key into the lock cylinder — lift off the slim handle cover first if fitted.
- Turn to unlock. The alarm may chirp until the engine starts and the chip is read.
Immobiliser note
The fob’s CR2032 cell only drives the proximity broadcast and remote buttons. Engine authorisation is handled by a passive transponder that draws its power from the start-button coil, so a flat cell never stops the XV starting — it only disables hands-free locking and the remote.
Replace the fob battery
The GT XV access key uses one CR2032 3V lithium coin cell in a snap-together case with no screws. Pull the emergency key out, then carefully prise the two halves apart at the key-slot seam. Lift the old cell, fit the new one with the + side up, click the case shut and refit the emergency key. Keyless entry and remote functions work again straight away.

XV or Crosstrek — is the procedure the same?
Yes. The XV and Crosstrek are the same GT-generation car under different market names, so the dead-fob start and battery swap are identical.
Do I hold the fob to the start button or the column?
To the START/STOP button. On the Mk2 XV the back-up reader is in the button, so that is where the dead fob must touch.
How do I open the fob without snapping it?
Remove the emergency key first — it leaves a gap at the seam. Prise gently there rather than forcing the flat faces, which can crack the casing.
Is it the fob or the 12V battery?
If the cabin stays dark when you open the door, suspect the car’s 12V battery. A flat coin cell only affects the remote and hands-free locking.
How often does the XV fob battery need changing?
Roughly every two to four years. A “key battery low” warning is your signal to replace the CR2032 before it goes flat completely.
