Re-initialise the Steering Angle Sensor

These instructions apply to the Suzuki Grand Vitara Mk2 (JB) 2005-2015. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 5, 2026

If the ESP / ESP® stability-control warning light is on in your Suzuki Grand Vitara Mk2 (JB, 2005–2015) — typically right after a battery disconnection, a flat battery or wheel-alignment work — the steering-angle sensor has lost its zero point and needs re-initialising. On the Grand Vitara this is a simple drive procedure with no tools. This guide shows how.

Why the Steering-Angle Sensor Needs Resetting

The stability system uses the steering-angle sensor to know where “straight ahead” is. When the car loses power that reference can be lost, so ESP flags a fault until it relearns the centre. A short straight-line drive lets it recalibrate.

How to Re-initialise the Grand Vitara Steering-Angle Sensor

  1. Start the engine and let it idle for a moment.
  2. Drive the vehicle in a straight line on a level, quiet road.
  3. Keep your speed in the 16–32 km/h (10–20 mph) band while driving straight.
  4. The ESP warning light goes out once the system has relearned the centre position.

If the light is still on after one run, repeat — make sure the steering is genuinely straight and the road is level.

When You’ll Need This

  • After disconnecting or changing the 12 V battery (see our Grand Vitara battery guide).
  • After a flat battery or jump-start.
  • After wheel-alignment or steering work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did the ESP light come on after my battery change?

The steering-angle sensor lost its calibrated centre point when power was removed. A short straight-line drive at 16–32 km/h restores it.

Do I need a diagnostic tool?

No — the Grand Vitara relearns the steering angle simply by driving straight in the right speed band. No scan tool is required for this step.

The light is still on after one drive — what now?

Repeat the straight-line run. If it persists, a related fault (e.g. a wheel-speed sensor or the ESP unit) may be stored — look up the code on autodtcs.com.

Is it safe to drive with the ESP light on?

The car still brakes and steers normally, but stability control may be disabled, so drive gently and complete the reset promptly — especially in the wet or on loose surfaces.

For warning lights, look up the code on autodtcs.com.
