The Suzuki Swift equipped with the 4-speed automatic transmission (4AT) requires proper fluid maintenance to ensure smooth shifting and long service life. This guide explains how to drain, refill, and check the ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid).
Draining and Refilling the ATF
Raise the vehicle securely.
Remove the engine lower cover.
Remove the drain plug and allow the ATF to drain completely.
Refit the drain plug with a new gasket.
Lower the vehicle.
Refill the transmission with the specified amount of ATF:
After overhaul: 5.8 L
Drain and refill: 3.3 L
Checking the Fluid Level
Drive the vehicle until the ATF reaches a temperature of 70–80°C.
Park the vehicle on a level surface with the engine running.
Apply the parking brake and block the wheels.
Keep the gear lever in P (Park).
Allow the engine to idle and switch the air conditioning OFF.
Press and hold the brake pedal.
Move the gear lever to L, then back to P.
Allow the engine to idle.
Remove the transmission dipstick, clean it, and reinsert it.
Remove the dipstick again and check that the ATF level is between the upper and lower HOT marks.
Top up ATF if necessary.
Torque Specification
Automatic transmission drain plug: 17 Nm
⚠️ Tip: Always use the correct type of automatic transmission fluid recommended by Suzuki for the 4AT gearbox. Overfilling or underfilling can cause shifting issues or damage.
