Replace a Headlight, Fog or Tail Light Bulb

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 7, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Suzuki Swift Mk3 (AZG/AZH) 2010-2017.

A blown bulb on the Suzuki Swift (2010–2017) is a quick DIY fix and an MOT failure if left. The headlights use H4 halogen bulbs and the front fogs use H11, so most jobs need only the correct bulb and, for the tail cluster, a screwdriver.

Suzuki Swift (2010–2017) bulb types

  • Headlight (low/high beam): H4, 12V 60/55W
  • Front fog light: H11, 12V 55W
  • Front & rear turn signal: PY21W, 12V 21W
  • Side repeater: WY5W, 12V 5W
  • Position (parking) light: W5W, 12V 5W
  • Tail / brake light: P21/5W, 12V 5/21W
  • Reverse & rear fog light: P21W, 12V 21W
  • Number-plate light: W5W, 12V 5W
  • High-level brake light: W5W, 12V 5W

How to Replace a Headlight Bulb

  1. Open the bonnet and find the back of the headlight unit on the side you are changing.
  2. Unclip the electrical connector from the rear of the H4 bulb and peel off the rubber dust cover.
  3. Release the metal spring clip and lift out the old bulb.
  4. Fit the new H4 bulb without touching the glass — skin oil shortens bulb life.
  5. Refit the spring clip, dust cover and connector, then test the low and high beam.

How to Replace a Tail Light Bulb

  1. Open the tailgate and remove the trim access cover or the two screws behind the rear light cluster.
  2. Withdraw the cluster, then twist the relevant bulb holder anti-clockwise to release it.
  3. Push and twist the old bulb out of its holder (bayonet fitting) and fit the correct replacement.
  4. Refit the holder, reseat the cluster and secure the screws, then check every function of the lamp.

FAQ

Do I need to touch the headlight bulb glass?
No — handle the H4 by its metal base. Fingerprints create hot spots that can crack the glass or shorten its life.

Why did my new bulb blow quickly?
Usually a touched glass envelope or moisture in the housing. Clean the glass with alcohol before fitting and check the lamp seals.

Will a bulb failure show a warning?
Exterior bulb-out warnings vary by trim. Always walk around the car to confirm the actual lamp, as the dash may not flag every bulb.

If a bulb fault leaves a lighting-related warning or code, look it up in the OBD-II fault-code guides at autodtcs.com.
