Reinitialise the Electric Windows

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated September 21, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Suzuki SX4 Mk1 (EY) 2006-2014.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

On European first-generation Suzuki SX4s the driver’s window has a one-touch auto-up function with anti-pinch protection. After the battery is disconnected, a fuse is pulled, or the driver’s door module is replaced, that auto-up stops working and must be re-initialised so the switch relearns the fully-closed position.

Does your car need this? US vs Europe

Check which window feature you have before starting:

  • European cars usually have driver’s auto-up and auto-down with pinch prevention — these need re-initialising after a power loss (follow the steps below).
  • US and Canadian cars have a driver’s auto-down feature only (no auto-up, no pinch sensor), so there is nothing to re-teach — the window simply works as before once power is restored.

Re-initialise whenever you disconnect the battery, remove the power-window fuse, or fit a new window motor, regulator or main switch.

Suzuki SX4 driver door power window switch marked AUTO
The driver’s door switch panel. The switch marked AUTO is the one-touch window that must be re-initialised after a battery disconnect.
  1. Switch the ignition to ON.
  2. Press the driver’s window switch down and open the glass fully.
  3. Lift the driver’s window switch to the MANUAL UP position (first click, not the auto detent) and hold it until the glass is completely closed — then keep holding for two more seconds.
  4. Release the switch. The closed position is now learned.
  5. Test it: press the switch fully up (auto) — the glass should close on its own; press fully down — it should open on its own.
  6. Check the anti-pinch function is back by letting the window rise against light hand pressure; it should stop and reverse.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my SX4 window only go up if I hold the switch?
On auto-up (European) cars the feature is disabled until the switch relearns the closed position. This is normal after a battery disconnect — follow the steps above to restore it.

My US SX4 has no auto-up at all — is that a fault?
No. US and Canadian cars were built with a driver’s auto-down feature only, so there is no auto-up to initialise. Holding the switch to raise the glass is normal on those cars.

The auto-up works but won’t stop for my hand — is that safe?
No. Do not use auto-up until the initialisation is complete, because the anti-pinch protection only works once the closed position is learned. Re-run the procedure and re-test gently.

If a window fault persists after initialising — or a related warning appears — check any stored body-control code on autodtcs.com.
