These instructions apply to the Tesla Model 3 (2017-2024).

The Tesla Model 3 (2017–2024) uses two stacked cabin air filters in the HVAC module behind the passenger footwell — the same twin-filter setup as the Model Y, not a single glovebox filter like most cars. A clogged pair is the usual cause of weak airflow or a musty smell, and swapping them is about a 30-minute owner job.
How to replace the Model 3 cabin air filters
- Turn the climate control off, slide the front passenger seat fully back, and lift out the passenger floor mat.
- Using a plastic trim tool and working top to bottom, release the right side panel of the center console and set it aside.
- Release the push clips holding the passenger footwell cover to the dash; then, supporting the cover, disconnect its two electrical connectors and move it aside.
- Remove the T20 Torx screw holding the filter cover on the HVAC module, release the cover and set it aside. The two filters sit stacked inside.
- Pull the upper filter out, then the lower one.
- Fit both new filters with the airflow arrows pointing toward the rear of the car, then refit the cover and screw, reconnect the two connectors, and refit the footwell cover and side panel.
Buy the filters in pairs — the Model 3 always takes two (Tesla part 1107681-00-A, usually sold as a set). Tesla recommends replacing them about every 2 years, sooner in dusty areas or if a smell develops; you can check or log it in the car’s Maintenance Summary (Controls > Service > Maintenance). Parts and the exact procedure can vary by market and model year, so confirm your car’s filter in Tesla’s official DIY guides. An activated-carbon set plus an evaporator treatment helps clear lingering odors.
Frequently asked questions
How many cabin filters does a Model 3 have?
Two, stacked in the HVAC module behind the passenger footwell. Always buy and fit them as a pair.
Which way do the filters face?
The airflow arrows point toward the rear of the car. Fitting them backward restricts airflow.
Do I need any tools?
A T20 Torx driver and a plastic trim tool. No scan tool — it’s a straightforward owner job, about 30 minutes.
Is the Model 3 filter the same as the Model Y?
Yes — the Model 3 and Model Y share the same twin-filter HVAC setup and the same filters, so the procedure is effectively identical.
Why does my Model 3 smell musty?
Clogged or damp cabin filters are the common cause — replace the pair and treat the evaporator; running the fan briefly after you park helps dry things out.
