Find the Fuse Box and Change a Fuse

If something electrical on your Toyota Aygo stops working — a light, the radio, a window — a blown fuse is often the cause. The Aygo has two fuse boxes: one in the engine bay and one hidden behind the instrument cluster. This guide shows where they are and how to check and change a fuse safely.

Where is the fuse box on a Toyota Aygo?

There are two. The engine-compartment fuse box sits on one side of the engine bay under a clip-on lid. The interior fuse box is behind the instrument cluster (the speedometer binnacle), under the meter cover — an unusual spot for a small car.

Always turn the engine switch to the “LOCK” position before opening either box.

How to reach the fuses

  1. Turn the ignition to LOCK and remove the key.
  2. Engine-bay box: open the hood, find the fuse box, push the tab in and lift the lid off.
  3. Interior box (behind the cluster): if the steering lock is engaged, turn the key to unlock the column first. Undo the meter-cover screws with a Phillips screwdriver, remove the lower tachometer screw, then lift and pull the cover forward to expose the fuses.
  4. Check the diagram printed on the fuse-box lid (or in the owner’s manual) to find the fuse for the circuit that has failed.

The interior box in particular is fiddly on the Aygo. If taking the meter cover off looks awkward, it is fine to leave that one to a workshop.

How to check and replace a fuse

  1. Pull the suspect fuse straight out. The small blade fuses come out with the pull-out tool clipped inside the fuse box — use the tool, not pliers or metal.
  2. Hold the fuse up to the light. A blown fuse has a broken metal strip inside; a good one is intact.
  3. Fit a new fuse of the same amperage rating (printed on the top and marked by color). Never fit a higher-rated fuse — it defeats the protection and can cause a wiring fire.
  4. Refit the lid (and the meter cover) and test the circuit.

If the new fuse blows again

A fuse that blows again straight away points to a fault in that circuit, not a one-off. Stop replacing it and have the circuit checked, rather than fitting ever-larger fuses.

Some fuses protect safety-critical systems such as the airbags and the engine management. If one of those has blown, or you are not sure which fuse does what, have it diagnosed by a qualified auto electrician.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the fuse box on a Toyota Aygo?

There are two: one in the engine bay under a clip-on lid, and one behind the instrument cluster under the meter cover. The interior box needs the meter cover unscrewed to reach it.

What do I use to pull the fuses out?

Use the small plastic pull-out tool stored inside the fuse box. Pulling blade fuses with metal tools or pliers risks shorting the circuit or damaging the fuse holder.

Can I fit a higher-amp fuse if it keeps blowing?

No. Always use the same amperage as the original. A higher-rated fuse lets too much current flow and can overheat the wiring and start a fire. A fuse that keeps blowing means there is a fault to fix.

Which fuse is which?

Read the legend printed on the inside of the fuse-box lid for your exact car — the layout varies by year, trim and options. Match the symbol to the circuit that has failed.

If a dashboard warning light came on along with the electrical fault, you can check what the specific symbol or stored fault code means on autodtcs.com.
