Clean the Hybrid Battery Cooling Filter

These instructions apply to the Toyota Corolla Mk12 (E210) 2019-Present. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 5, 2026

If your hybrid Toyota Corolla Mk12 (E210, 2019–present) shows the message “Maintenance required for traction battery cooling parts – See owner’s manual”, it means the hybrid battery cooling filter has collected enough dust to restrict airflow. Toyota lists this as an owner maintenance task in the handbook: you clean (or renew) a dust filter that sits behind a trim panel. This guide shows how to do it safely. You are only cleaning a dust filter — you never touch the high-voltage battery itself.

Why the Filter Exists

The hybrid (traction) battery is air-cooled by a small blower that draws cabin air through it. A foam dust filter protects the blower. Over time it clogs with dust and pet hair, the battery runs warmer, and the car prompts you to clean it. Keeping it clean helps the hybrid battery stay cool and last longer.

Safety First

  • You are cleaning a dust filter only. Do not remove the high-voltage battery, disconnect any orange cables, or undo the orange service plug.
  • Do not let the blower fan spin while you work near it — a spinning fan can generate voltage. Work with the car off.
  • If anything beyond the filter looks damaged, stop and have a Toyota technician look at it.

How to Clean the Corolla Hybrid Battery Cooling Filter

  1. Switch the car fully off and remove the smart key from the area.
  2. Locate the cooling intake/filter — it’s behind the rear-side trim panel / under the rear seat area on the cabin side of the hybrid battery (your handbook shows the exact spot for your body style).
  3. Remove the filter access/service cover. Renew any clips that are cracked or deformed.
  4. Take out the foam filter and clean it:
    • Blow it through from the back with compressed air, keeping the gun at least 30 mm away.
    • Do not use liquid cleaner and do not use a wire brush.
  5. If you can’t remove the filter, at least vacuum the dust and debris off the filter/service cover (use a vacuum here, not compressed air, so you don’t blow dust into the battery).
  6. If the foam is torn, deformed or won’t come clean, fit a new filter (a cheap Toyota part).
  7. Refit the filter, cover and trim in reverse order.

After Cleaning

The reminder usually clears on its own once airflow is restored. If your car has a menu reset for it, follow the on-screen prompt; otherwise the message stops at the next drive cycle. If it keeps returning with a clean filter, have the blower checked.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this safe for an owner to do?

Yes — Toyota documents it as owner maintenance. You only clean a dust filter behind a trim panel; you never open or touch the high-voltage battery or its orange cabling.

How often does it need doing?

Only when the car asks, or sooner if you carry pets or drive in dusty conditions. There’s no fixed mileage.

Can I wash the filter with water?

No — Toyota says no liquid cleaner and no wire brush. Use compressed air from the back, or vacuum it.

The message won’t clear after cleaning — what now?

If the filter is genuinely clean and clips are intact, have the cooling blower and ducting checked for blockage or a faulty fan.

To clear the separate service/maintenance reminder after a service, see our Corolla Mk12 maintenance reset guide. For any hybrid-system warning light, look up the code on autodtcs.com.
