These instructions apply to the Toyota Tacoma Mk2 (N200) 2005-2015.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.
A flat 12 V battery will stop a 2005–2015 Toyota Tacoma cranking. Jump it in the right order and ground the last clamp to bare metal away from the battery. This is the US-market procedure.
- Park a 12 V donor vehicle close but not touching. Both parking brakes on, both ignitions off.
- Clamp the red (+) cable to the Tacoma’s positive (+) terminal, then the other end to the donor’s positive (+).
- Clamp the black (−) cable to the donor’s negative (−), then the other end to a solid unpainted metal point on the Tacoma — away from the battery and moving parts, not the dead battery’s negative post.
- Start the donor, raise its idle slightly for about 5 minutes, then start the Tacoma.
- Remove the cables in the exact reverse order.
FAQ
Where does the negative clamp go?
On bare, unpainted metal on the engine — not the dead battery’s negative terminal — so the final spark stays clear of battery gas.
Can I push- or tow-start it?
No. An automatic can’t be push-started, and a manual Tacoma risks catalytic-converter damage. Use cables or a jump pack.
It died again after disconnecting.
The battery isn’t holding charge or the alternator isn’t charging — have both tested.
