If the remote on your Vauxhall Astra Mk8 (L, 2022–present) has gone weak — short range, fussy keyless entry, or a “key battery low” message — the coin cell needs renewing. The Astra fob takes a CR2032 and opens with the emergency key blade. No programming needed.
What You’ll Need
- A fresh CR2032 3 V lithium coin cell.
- The emergency key blade and a small flat screwdriver.
How to Replace the Astra Mk8 Key Battery
- Slide out the emergency key blade (release the catch on the fob).
- Use a small screwdriver in the slot the blade leaves to split the case / lift the cover.
- Lift out the old CR2032, noting which way up it sits.
- Fit the new cell the same way, by the edges.
- Click the case together and slide the blade home.
- Test lock/unlock from a normal distance.
Does It Need Programming?
No — the swap doesn’t affect the fob’s pairing, so it works straight away. A lost or extra key can only be ordered and coded by a Vauxhall/Opel dealer.
If It Still Won’t Respond
Re-open the fob, check the cell orientation and clean the contacts. On keyless cars, hold the fob against the marked spot and press START to start if entry is slow.
Frequently Asked Questions
What battery does the Astra Mk8 key take?
A single CR2032 3 V lithium coin cell.
Will the car start with a flat key battery?
Yes — on keyless cars hold the fob against the marked reader and press START; the emergency blade unlocks the driver’s door.
Which way up does the cell go?
Match the orientation of the cell you removed.
Can I program a spare key myself?
No — Vauxhall/Opel key coding needs the dealer system. Only the battery swap is DIY.
