When the spanner or a “Service” message appears on your Vauxhall Astra Mk8 (L, 2022–present) — the same car as the Opel Astra, now on the Stellantis platform — the service-interval counter has run out. You can clear it yourself with the reset button in under a minute. Do the oil and filter first, then follow the steps.
Reset Only After the Service
The counter just tracks distance and time since the last reset; clearing it early hides the reminder while the oil ages. Reset it only once the work is done.
How to Reset the Astra Mk8 Service Indicator
- Turn the ignition off.
- Press and hold the reset button (the trip/zero button on the stalk or dash).
- While still holding it, turn the ignition on — don’t press the brake and don’t start the engine.
- The ‘maintenance key’ symbol appears and a countdown begins.
- Keep the button held until the display shows ‘0’, then release.
- The maintenance symbol disappears and the service is reset.
If the Reminder Comes Back
- Released too early — hold until the countdown reaches 0; repeat if needed.
- A different warning is on — that’s a fault, not the service timer, and won’t clear this way.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the reset button on the Astra Mk8?
It’s the trip-reset (zero) button on the wiper stalk or instrument panel — the one you use to zero the trip distance.
Does the engine need to be running?
No — the engine should be off. You hold the button, switch the ignition on (no brake, no start), and wait for the countdown.
Is the Vauxhall Astra the same as the Opel Astra?
Yes — same car, different badge; this reset works on both.
The light stays on after resetting — why?
If it’s the spanner, you let go too early. A different warning is a fault needing diagnosis.
If a warning light appeared with the service message, look it up on autodtcs.com. After battery work, see our Astra Mk8 battery guide.
