A “Service” or “Inspection” message on your Volkswagen Passat B8 (3G, 2015–2023) means a maintenance interval is up. You clear it yourself with the trip-reset button — no workshop tester needed. Do the oil and filter change first.
On the B8-generation Passat the service prompt shows up as a spanner symbol together with a ‘Service now’, ‘Service’ or ‘Inspection’ message, often after a short ‘Service in … km / … days’ countdown in the days before it becomes due. It is a maintenance reminder, not a fault warning. Nothing has broken; the car has simply reached the point in its schedule where it wants attention. Because the reminder is driven by a counter rather than by anything measuring the oil, it will keep appearing at every start-up until it is reset — which is a job you finish off yourself once the service work is done.
What the Service Message Means on the Passat B8
Volkswagen’s servicing on this generation can run on one of two regimes, and which one your car uses affects when the message appears. A car set to a fixed (time & distance) schedule counts down a set mileage or a set number of months and prompts at whichever comes first. A car set to flexible / LongLife servicing uses sensors and driving data to extend or shorten the interval according to how the car is driven. Either way the dashboard prompt behaves the same and is cleared the same way. Because the exact mileage and time figures depend on your car’s regime, engine and market, check the schedule in your owner’s handbook rather than assuming a number.
Note too that the Passat may track two counters separately — an oil-change service and a longer inspection service. When both are due the car can prompt for each in turn, so you may need to run the reset more than once.
Reset Only After the Work
The interval just counts mileage and time, so clearing it early simply hides the reminder while the oil keeps ageing.
Before you begin, a quick checklist:
- Do the service first. Change the oil and filter (and anything else due) before you reset — the reset zeroes the counter only, it does nothing to the oil.
- Park safely. Level ground, handbrake on, gear selector in P or neutral.
- Engine off. The reset is done with the ignition on and the engine not running.
- Locate the trip-reset (0.0) button on the end of the wiper stalk or on the dash before you start, so you can find it in the dark.
How to Reset the Passat B8 Service Indicator
- Turn the ignition off.
- Press and hold the 0.0 / trip-reset button on the wiper stalk or dash.
- Keeping it held, switch the ignition on, then release.
- The display asks ‘Reset oil change service?’ — press the button again to confirm.
- Repeat for the inspection counter if it’s shown separately.
Cars with the digital cockpit can also reset via the cluster/infotainment Settings → Service menu.
If the Reminder Returns
- It reappears at start-up — the confirmation wasn’t completed; run it again.
- You released the button too soon — hold the 0.0 button first, then turn the ignition on with it still held, and only release once the service prompt shows.
- Only one counter cleared — if both oil-change and inspection are due, reset the second one as well when it prompts.
- Engine started by mistake — keep it to ignition-on only; if the engine fired, switch off and begin again.
- It’s a different symbol — that’s a fault, not the service timer.
Once the Reset Is Done
With the reset confirmed, the ‘Service’ or ‘Inspection’ message clears and the countdown restarts at the full interval. If your cluster shows a ‘Service in … km / … days’ figure, it should now display the full distance and period again. The message should not come back at the next start. If it does, the confirmation step didn’t take and you repeat the procedure.
Reset Frequency
Reset the service indicator after every service, and only then. Whether the car runs a fixed or a flexible (LongLife) schedule, the reminder is meant to line up with the actual maintenance being carried out, so clearing it at any other time simply removes a prompt you want to keep.
