Reinitialise the Electric Windows

These instructions apply to the Volkswagen Golf Mk7 (5G) 2012-2020. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 4, 2026

If the electric windows on your Volkswagen Golf Mk7 (5G/BE/BA/BV/BQ, 2012–2020) have stopped working with a single touch — you press the switch and the glass only moves while you hold it, with no one-touch up/down and no auto-close from the key — the window controller has simply lost its calibration. It happens after the battery is disconnected or goes flat, after a fuse is pulled, or sometimes after a regulator or motor is replaced. The fix is a quick re-initialisation you can do yourself in under a minute per window, with no tools.

Why One-Touch and Anti-Pinch Disappear

Each door module needs to know exactly where the fully-closed and fully-open positions are so it can run the glass automatically and stop it if it meets resistance (the anti-pinch safety function). When power is interrupted, the module clears those end stops as a precaution — it would rather lose convenience features than risk an uncalibrated window trapping something. Until you re-teach the positions, the window only “inches” while you hold the switch, and the comfort-open/close from the remote will not work.

Before You Start

  • Sit in the car with the doors closed — the procedure should be done with everything shut.
  • Switch the ignition on (engine off is fine; the screen and switches must be live).
  • Keep hands, fingers and loose clothing clear of the window channel — during the relearn the anti-pinch protection is not active.
  • If a window is sticky or the runner is dry, the relearn may not “take” until the mechanism moves freely. A little silicone on the channel rubbers helps.

How to Re-initialise a Mk7 Golf Window

Do this one window at a time, using that door’s own switch (you can also do the front windows from the driver’s door switch pack):

  1. Turn the ignition on and make sure the door is closed.
  2. Pull the window switch up to fully close the window and keep holding the switch for at least one second after the glass has seated in the top of the frame. This stores the closed end-stop.
  3. Release the switch.
  4. Press the switch down to fully open the window and again hold it for about one second after it reaches the bottom.
  5. Release the switch.
  6. Pull the switch up once more using the one-touch action — the window should now run all the way up on its own. If it does, calibration is complete.
  7. Repeat for each remaining window.

Once re-initialised, the one-touch up/down returns, the anti-pinch protection is active again, and the windows respond to comfort-open and comfort-close from the remote key.

If the Window Still Won’t Auto-Close

  • You didn’t hold long enough: the most common reason — repeat the steps and hold the switch a clear second past each end stop.
  • Glass binding: a dry or twisted runner stops the module seeing a clean end stop. Clean and lubricate the channel, then retry.
  • Anti-pinch keeps reversing the glass: if the window rises part-way then drops, something is adding friction (often the seal in cold weather). Warm the car, lubricate the rubbers and relearn again.
  • Only happened after a battery job: that is expected — see our Mk7 Golf battery disconnect/reconnect guide, which lists the window relearn as one of the post-reconnection steps.
  • Switch or motor fault: if no window will calibrate and you hear the motor straining or silent, the regulator, motor or switch may be at fault and the car may store a body-control code. You can check what a stored code points to on autodtcs.com.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a diagnostic tool to reset the windows?

No. The relearn is done entirely with the window switch as described above. A scan tool is only needed if a genuine fault is stored after a motor or regulator failure.

Why did all four windows lose one-touch at once?

Because they all lost power together — almost always after a flat or disconnected battery, or a pulled fuse. Re-initialise each one and they will all come back.

Is the anti-pinch safety working during the relearn?

No — that is exactly why you must keep hands and objects clear of the glass while teaching the end stops. Full protection returns once calibration is complete.

My sunroof also stopped auto-closing — is it the same fix?

The panoramic sunroof uses a similar relearn (hold the switch at the closed position) but the exact action differs; check the handbook for the sunroof initialisation if yours is affected after a power loss.

If you also need to clear a service reminder after the work, see our Mk7 Golf service indicator reset guide.
