Turn Off the Start-Stop System

These instructions apply to the Volkswagen Golf Mk7 (5G) 2012-2020. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

The automatic start/stop system on the Volkswagen Golf Mk7 (5G/BE/BA/BV/BQ, 2012–2020) shuts the engine down at junctions and traffic lights to save fuel and restarts it when you pull away. Plenty of owners find it intrusive — especially in stop-start traffic, when towing, or in very hot or cold weather — and want it switched off. This guide explains how to turn start/stop off on a Mk7 Golf, the second “hidden” method when the button is awkward to reach, and why the car keeps switching it back on every time you start it.

How Start/Stop Works on the Mk7

The system only stops the engine when a list of conditions is met: the car is stationary, the engine is warm, the battery is well charged, the climate demand is satisfied and you have the clutch up (manual) or your foot on the brake (DSG). Because of those conditions it is normal for start/stop to do nothing on a cold morning or with the heater blasting — that is the system working as designed, not a fault. When it does cut the engine, a green “A” with a circular arrow appears; if it cannot stop the engine you may see the same symbol with a line through it.

Method 1 — The Start/Stop Button

  1. With the engine running, find the start/stop button. On most Mk7 Golfs it is on the centre console just ahead of or beside the gear lever, marked with an “A” inside a circular arrow. On some trims it sits in the bank of switches below the climate controls.
  2. Press the button once.
  3. The warning light in the button illuminates and the instrument cluster shows a “Start/stop: off” message.
  4. The system is now deactivated and the engine will idle normally at a standstill.

Press the same button again to switch start/stop back on; the light goes out and the message confirms it is active.

Method 2 — Driver’s Seat Belt and Door

The Mk7 will not auto-stop the engine unless the driver’s seat belt is fastened and the driver’s door is closed — this is a safety interlock. You can use it as a workaround if you only need to suppress an auto-stop briefly:

  1. While stationary, the engine will not enter auto-stop if the driver’s seat belt is unbuckled.
  2. Equally, if the driver’s door is opened, the system is inhibited.

This is not a tidy everyday solution — you should stay belted while driving — but it explains why the system sometimes seems to “not work” and gives you a way to force the engine to keep running momentarily.

Why It Switches Back On Every Time

This is the part that frustrates owners: the button only disables start/stop for the current drive cycle. Every time you switch the ignition off and on again, the Golf re-enables start/stop by default. Volkswagen designed it that way because the system contributes to the car’s official emissions figures.

There is no factory menu setting to make “off” the permanent default. The only way to make the change stick is to recode the relevant control module with a VAG-compatible tool. Using a diagnostic interface such as OBDeleven or VCDS, owners commonly either set the system to remember the last state or adjust the engine-start coordinator so the default is “off.” Coding is at your own risk and may not be appropriate if the car must meet specific emissions requirements in your region.

When You Should Leave Start/Stop On

  • It genuinely saves a little fuel in urban driving.
  • Repeated auto-stops are not harming the engine — the Mk7 uses an uprated starter and AGM/EFB battery designed for thousands of cycles.
  • If start/stop has stopped working entirely, the usual cause is a tired battery or a battery that was replaced without registration, not a fault with the system itself.

Troubleshooting: Start/Stop No Longer Activates

If your Mk7 used to stop the engine and now never does, work through these in order: the battery state of charge is low; the battery was replaced but not coded to the car; the climate system is still demanding heating or cooling; the engine or gearbox is not yet up to temperature; or the car has logged a fault. A stored battery-management or engine fault can disable start/stop silently — you can check what any code means on autodtcs.com.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does turning off start/stop use more fuel?

Marginally, in stop-and-go traffic. On the open road it makes no difference because the system only acts when you are stationary.

Can I permanently disable start/stop on a Mk7 Golf without coding?

No. The physical button only lasts for the current drive. A permanent default change requires recoding a control module with a VAG diagnostic tool.

Is it bad for the engine to keep restarting?

No. The Mk7’s starter, dual-mass flywheel and battery are all specified for start/stop duty. The engine oil pressure builds instantly on restart and the system blocks auto-stop until the engine is warm.

Why does the “A” symbol have a line through it?

That means start/stop is temporarily unavailable — usually because a stop condition is not met (cold engine, low battery, climate demand). It will resume automatically once conditions allow.

If a warning light prompted you to investigate, our Mk7 Golf battery disconnect/reconnect guide covers the battery side of these symptoms.
