Reinitialise the Electric Windows

If the electric windows on your Volkswagen Polo Mk6 (AW, 2018–present) have stopped going up with a single touch — they now only move while you hold the switch, with no auto-close from the key — the window controller has lost its calibration. It happens after the battery is disconnected or goes flat, after a fuse is pulled, or after a regulator or motor is replaced. The fix is a quick re-initialisation you can do yourself in under a minute per window, with no tools.

Why One-Touch and Anti-Pinch Disappear

Each door module needs to know exactly where the fully-closed position is so it can run the glass automatically and stop it if it meets resistance (the anti-pinch safety function). When power is interrupted, the module clears that end stop as a precaution. Until you re-teach it, the window only inches while you hold the switch, and the comfort-open/close from the remote will not work.

Before You Start

• Sit in the car with the doors closed.
• Switch the ignition on (engine off is fine; the switches must be live).
• Keep hands and objects clear of the glass — during the relearn the anti-pinch protection is not active.

How to Re-initialise a Polo Mk6 Window

1. Turn the ignition on and make sure all doors are closed.
2. Pull the window switch up to fully close the window and hold for about 1 second after the glass seats in the top of the frame. This stores the closed end-stop.
3. Release the switch.
4. Pull and hold the switch up once more using the one-touch action — the window should now run fully up on its own.
5. Turn the ignition off. Repeat for each remaining window.

Once re-initialised, the one-touch up/down returns, the anti-pinch protection is active again, and the windows respond to comfort-open and close from the remote.

If the Window Still Won’t Auto-Close

• You didn’t hold long enough: the most common cause — repeat and hold the switch a clear second past the end stop.
• Glass binding: a dry or twisted runner stops the module seeing a clean end stop. Clean and lubricate the channel, then retry.
• Anti-pinch keeps reversing the glass: friction (often a stiff seal in cold weather) makes the module think it has hit an obstacle. Warm the car, lubricate the rubbers and relearn again.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a diagnostic tool to reset the Polo windows?

No. The relearn is done entirely with the window switch as described. A scan tool is only needed if a genuine fault is stored after a motor or regulator failure.

Why did more than one window lose one-touch at once?

Because they lost power together — almost always after a flat or disconnected battery or a pulled fuse. Re-initialise each one and they all come back.

Is the anti-pinch safety working during the relearn?
