These instructions apply to the Volkswagen Transporter T6 (SG) 2015-2019.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.
The Transporter T6’s engine start/stop can be a nuisance in traffic or when you are working around the van. You can switch it off in a couple of seconds — though the van turns it back on at the next start, so it is a per-trip choice.
Turn the T6 start/stop system on or off
- With the engine running, press the start/stop button on the dash (marked with the “A” inside a circular arrow).
- The start/stop warning light comes on and the display confirms the system is switched off.
- To turn it back on, press the same button again — or simply restart the van, as it defaults to on.
If your van has no dedicated button, the system also stays awake if the driver’s seat belt is unbuckled or the driver’s door is open, because it will not auto-stop the engine in those states.
Frequently asked questions
Why won’t my T6 auto-stop even with the system on?
Start/stop only acts when conditions are met: engine warm, battery well charged, cabin not demanding heat or cooling, and the van fully stopped. On a cold morning or with a tired battery it simply will not trigger.
Does turning it off stay off permanently?
No — it resets to on every time you start the van. There is no menu toggle to make “off” permanent from the factory.
Is leaving start/stop off bad for the van?
No. It saves a little fuel when on, but switching it off does no harm and can be easier on the starter and battery in stop-go use.
If a start/stop or battery warning appears, you can look the code up on autodtcs.com.
