Turn the Stop-Start System On or Off

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated August 27, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Suzuki Celerio Mk1 (LF) 2014-2019.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

The Suzuki Celerio’s ENG A-STOP stop/start system switches the engine off when you stop and restarts it when you pull away. It turns itself on at every engine start, but you can disable it for the current drive with the ENG A-STOP OFF switch.

Before you start

  • The system only auto-stops the engine when the driver’s seatbelt is fastened and the driver’s door and bonnet are closed.
  • A green A-STOP indicator shows when the engine has been stopped automatically.
  1. Start the engine — ENG A-STOP is active by default.
  2. To turn it off, press the ENG A-STOP OFF switch once; an amber “A OFF” indicator lights to confirm the system is disabled for this drive.
  3. To turn it back on during the same drive, press the switch again; the amber “A OFF” indicator goes out.
  4. When you next stop the car, keep the seatbelt on and the door and bonnet closed so an auto-stop can occur.
  5. Note that switching the ignition off and restarting always returns the system to ON — there is no permanent factory off setting.

FAQ

Why won’t my Celerio auto-stop the engine?

Auto-stop is inhibited unless the driver’s seatbelt is fastened and the driver’s door and bonnet are closed. It is also held off while the engine or cabin temperature, battery charge, or other conditions are outside the system’s limits, so it may not stop on a cold morning or in heavy climate-control use.

Can I make stop/start stay off permanently?

No. The Celerio resets ENG A-STOP to on every time you start the engine, so you have to press the OFF switch again on each drive if you prefer it disabled.

What does the green A-STOP light mean?

The green light indicates the engine has been stopped automatically and is ready to restart. It restarts as you release the clutch (or press it) to move off, which is normal system behaviour rather than a fault.
