Disconnect and Reconnect the Battery

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated September 24, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Toyota Aygo Mk1 (B10) 2005-2014.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Disconnecting the 12V battery cuts all power to the car, which you need for accessory work, before long-term storage, or to clear an electrical fault. On the first-generation Aygo the battery sits in the engine compartment. Work in the right order to stay safe and avoid losing settings.

The Aygo's 12-volt battery sits in the engine bay; the positive terminal has a red cover.
  1. Turn the ignition off, remove the key, and switch off all electrical consumers such as lights, heater blower, and audio.
  2. Before you disconnect anything, check whether the radio has a security code. If it does, note the code down (along with your presets), because it is lost the moment power is cut.
  3. Disconnect the negative (minus) terminal first, then move the clamp aside so it cannot spring back and touch the post.
  4. Disconnect the positive terminal next.
  5. If you will work near pyrotechnic components such as the airbags or seat-belt pretensioners, wait 90 seconds after disconnecting before you start work.
  6. To reconnect, reverse the order: fit the positive terminal first, then the negative last, and tighten both clamps securely.
  7. Switch the ignition on, reset the clock, and re-enter the radio presets and security code if you are prompted for them.

Good to know

Wear eye protection and keep sparks and flames well away from the battery, as the gases it gives off are explosive. Find and note the radio security code before you disconnect, because you will need it to switch the audio back on if a code is set.

On this generation, reconnecting the same battery needs no coding or workshop tools, so once the clock and radio are set the car is ready to use.

FAQ

Which terminal do I disconnect first?

Always take off the negative (minus) terminal first, and refit it last. When reconnecting, fit the positive first and the negative last. This order reduces the risk of a short circuit against the bodywork.

Where is the battery on an Aygo?

The 12V battery is in the engine compartment. Open the bonnet and you will find it with the positive and negative terminals on top.

What will I lose when I disconnect the battery?

The clock resets and your radio presets are cleared. If the audio unit has a security code set, you will need to re-enter it, so make sure you have the code before you start.

Do I need to wait after disconnecting?

Only if you are working near the airbags or seat-belt pretensioners. In that case, wait 90 seconds after disconnecting before you begin, so the pyrotechnic systems fully power down.
