The Toyota Aygo’s wireless remote works the central locking, and you can register a new one yourself with a door-and-ignition sequence – no dealer visit needed. Use this when you buy a spare fob, replace a lost one, or the remote has stopped locking the car. Up to four remotes can be paired.

- Sit in the driver’s seat with the door open, the key out of the ignition and the ignition off. Insert the key and turn the ignition ON, then OFF.
- Within 40 seconds, close and open the driver’s door twice.
- Turn the ignition ON, then OFF.
- Within 40 seconds, close and open the driver’s door twice again.
- Close the driver’s door, then lock all the doors with the interior lock.
- Within 40 seconds, turn the ignition from LOCK to ON and back to LOCK once, at roughly one-second intervals. One cycle selects Add mode, which keeps any remotes already paired.
- Unlock all the doors. The door locks operate once to confirm Add mode has been entered.
- Remove the key. After about 40 seconds, programming mode starts automatically.
- Press the remote’s LOCK and UNLOCK buttons together for 1.5 seconds. Then within 3 seconds press and hold the LOCK button, wait 2 seconds and release.
- Within 3 seconds the door locks operate once, confirming the remote is registered. If they operate twice, it failed – start again from the beginning.
- To register another remote, repeat step 9 within 40 seconds. When you have finished, the procedure ends on its own after 40 seconds.
Good to know
The number of ignition ON cycles at step 6 chooses the mode. One cycle is Add mode, which registers a new remote while keeping the existing ones. Two cycles is Rewrite mode, which erases every paired remote first – use this to bar a lost fob, then re-add the ones you still have.
The timing is tight: each stage has roughly a 40-second window, so read the steps through once and keep moving. This procedure pairs the wireless remote only. Cutting a new key blade or matching the immobiliser chip needs a Toyota dealer with a diagnostic tool.
FAQ
Can I programme an Aygo remote myself?
Yes. The door-and-ignition sequence above registers the wireless remote without any dealer equipment. You only need the working key and the fob you want to add.
How many remotes can the Aygo store?
Up to four remotes can be registered to one car, so you can keep a spare or two alongside your everyday fob.
How do I erase a remote I have lost?
Use Rewrite mode – give two ignition ON cycles at step 6 instead of one. This wipes all paired remotes, so afterwards re-add each fob you still have. A lost remote left registered can still unlock the car.
Does this cut or programme a new key?
No. It only pairs the wireless remote for the central locking. A new key blade and its immobiliser chip must be supplied and coded by a Toyota dealer.
