Reset the Service Reminder

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated September 4, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Hyundai i40 Mk1 (VF) 2011-2019.

When your Hyundai i40 (VF, 2011–2019) is due a service, a spanner reminder appears in the instrument cluster. After the oil and filter have been changed you clear it yourself in under a minute using the trip-computer buttons — no dealer tool needed.

How to Reset the i40 Service Reminder

  1. Turn the ignition ON (engine off — the instruments light up).
  2. Press and hold the right-hand trip/reset button until the ‘SERVICE’ menu appears on the cluster display.
  3. Then press and hold the left-hand trip/reset button until ‘RESET’ is shown and the countdown returns to the full interval.
  4. Turn the ignition off. The spanner is cleared.

Good to Know

  • The reminder is based on distance and time — it tells you a service is due, it does not measure oil condition.
  • Only reset it once the work is actually done, or the schedule will be wrong.
  • The two buttons are the same ones used to cycle the trip meters and the info display.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the spanner symbol on my i40 mean?

It is the service reminder telling you the car has reached its scheduled maintenance interval. It is not a fault; it clears once the service is carried out and the reminder is reset.

Do I need a diagnostic tool to reset it?

No. The reset is built into the cluster and is done with the trip/reset buttons and the ignition on. A diagnostic tool is only needed for deeper service data.

Does resetting the reminder change the oil life?

No. The i40 tracks the interval by distance and time, not oil quality. Resetting simply restarts the countdown to the next scheduled service.

If a warning light stays on afterwards, look the code up on our sister site autodtcs.com to see what it means.
