Reset the Oil Change Reminder

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated September 8, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Dodge Magnum Mk1 (LX) 2005-2008.

After an oil change on the Dodge Magnum (LX, 2005–2008) you need to clear the “Change Oil” message so the reminder counts down to the next service. The Magnum has an engine oil change indicator system, and you reset it with a short accelerator-pedal sequence — no tool required.

How the Reminder Works

The system is duty-cycle based, so the interval varies with how you drive rather than being a fixed mileage. When a change is due, the “Change Oil” message flashes in the odometer for about 12 seconds (after a single chime) each time you switch the ignition to ON. Pressing the trip-odometer button clears the message for that drive, but it returns at the next start until you reset the system.

How to Reset the Oil Change Indicator

Do this only after the oil and filter have actually been changed:

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position — do not start the engine.
  2. Fully depress the accelerator pedal slowly three times within 10 seconds.
  3. Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position.

If the “Change Oil” message still appears the next time you start the car, the reset did not take — repeat the procedure, keeping all three pedal presses inside the ten-second window and pressing the pedal all the way down each time.

Fit the grade for your engine — they are not all the same:

  • 2.7L V6: SAE 5W-20, API certified.
  • 3.5L V6: SAE 10W-30, API certified — note this V6 does not take 5W-20.
  • 5.7L HEMI V8: SAE 5W-20, API certified — about 6.6 L (7.0 qt) with a filter. The 3.5L V6 holds about 5.7 L (6.0 qt) with a filter.

Using the correct grade matters on the 5.7 HEMI, whose Multi-Displacement System relies on the specified oil to switch cylinders cleanly.

Frequently Asked Questions

My pedal-pump reset did nothing — why? The three presses probably fell outside the ten-second window, or the ignition was not fully in the ON position. Press the pedal all the way down each time and keep within ten seconds.

Can I just press the trip button to clear it? That only hides the message for the current drive — it returns at the next start. The accelerator-pedal sequence is what actually resets the system.

Should I reset it without changing the oil? No — the indicator is your service reminder; clearing it early loses track of when the oil is really due.

Does the 3.5L really use different oil? Yes — the 3.5L V6 is specified for 10W-30, while the 2.7L V6 and 5.7L V8 use 5W-20. Check your handbook and oil-fill cap.
