Disconnecting the 12 volt battery on the first-generation Suzuki SX4 cuts power for bodywork, jump-starts or long-term storage. The battery sits in the engine bay. Always remove the negative terminal first and reconnect it last, then relearn the few settings the car loses — which differ slightly between US and European cars.
Before you start
Note down your radio security code and clock time first — both are lost when power is cut. Make sure the ignition is off and the key is out. You need a 10 mm spanner for the terminal clamps.

- Open the bonnet and locate the battery on the left-hand side of the engine bay.
- Lift the terminal cover and loosen the negative (−) clamp nut with a 10 mm spanner, then lift the cable clear and tuck it aside so it cannot spring back onto the post.
- If you are removing the battery, loosen the positive (+) clamp next, then undo the hold-down bracket at the base and lift the battery out.
- To refit, set the battery in place and secure the hold-down bracket, then connect the positive (+) cable first.
- Connect the negative (−) cable last and tighten both clamps. Refit the terminal cover.
- Turn the ignition to ON and re-enter the clock and radio code.
- Let the engine idle for a minute after starting so the engine management relearns its idle. On cars with ESP, drive gently at first — the steering-angle sensor recalibrates as you drive straight.
What to relearn afterwards — US vs Europe
Every SX4 loses its clock and radio code. Beyond that, the relearns depend on the equipment your car has:
- European cars with a one-touch driver’s window need the power window re-initialised (open the glass fully, then hold the switch in the MANUAL UP position until it shuts and for two seconds more).
- US and Canadian cars generally have a driver’s auto-down window only, so there is nothing to re-teach there. Their tyre-pressure monitoring system re-learns on its own after a short drive; no button press is needed.
Frequently asked questions
Where is the battery on the Suzuki SX4?
Under the bonnet, on the left-hand side of the engine bay. There is no under-seat or boot battery on this generation.
Will I lose my radio code?
Yes. The audio unit and clock reset when the negative cable is removed, so write the code down before you start. If you do not have it, your Suzuki dealer can retrieve it from the unit’s serial number.
Do I need to reset the tyre-pressure system (US cars)?
No manual reset is needed. US-market SX4s with TPMS relearn the sensors automatically as you drive after the battery is reconnected. Only if a wheel or sensor is replaced does a dealer need to set the system up. European cars from this era do not have TPMS at all.
Why won’t my driver’s window auto-close after reconnecting (European cars)?
The power-window control loses its learned “closed” position when power is cut. Re-initialise it by holding the switch fully up for a couple of seconds after the glass shuts — the auto-up and anti-pinch function then return.
If a warning light stays on after reconnecting the battery, read the stored fault code first — you can look up any dashboard code on autodtcs.com before deciding whether it needs attention.
