If you have bought a spare remote for your first-generation Suzuki SX4, or a transmitter has lost its code, you can program it yourself without a dealer tool. The exact sequence differs between European and US/Canadian cars, so follow the one that matches your market. Have every remote you want to keep with you — older codes are cleared when the memory is re-programmed.
European keyless-entry cars
The European remote uses a short door-and-ignition sequence and stores up to three codes; when a fourth is added the oldest is erased.

- Confirm all doors are closed and the key is out of the ignition.
- Open the driver’s door and leave it open.
- Turn the ignition switch to ON, then withdraw the key within 10 seconds.
- Within 20 seconds of removing the key, push and release the driver’s door lock switch three times by hand.
- Turn the ignition to ON again and withdraw the key within 10 seconds. All doors lock and unlock once — the car is now in registration mode.
- Within 20 seconds, press the UNLOCK button on the remote. All doors lock and unlock once to confirm the code is stored.
- To add another remote, repeat the whole sequence from step 1 with the next transmitter.
- Turn the ignition off, close the door and test each remote.
US and Canadian cars
US-market cars use a longer in-car sequence and store up to four remotes. Programming a new code erases the old ones, so you must re-register every remote you want to keep in the same session. Keyless-start (push-button) cars follow this same in-car sequence.
- Close all the doors and sit in the driver’s seat with the driver’s door unlocked.
- Insert the key into the ignition switch. You must complete the next steps within about 25 seconds.
- Push the driver’s power door-lock switch to LOCK, then to UNLOCK. Repeat this two more times (three cycles in all).
- Push the door-lock switch to LOCK once more.
- Remove the key from the ignition and reinsert it. Repeat this three more times (four times in all).
- Turn the ignition to START, run the engine and wait about three seconds.
- Turn the ignition to LOCK. A buzzer sounds twice and the door locks cycle by themselves — the car is now in programming mode.
- Operate the LOCK button on each remote you want to keep, one after another, then remove the key to finish. Check that every remote locks and unlocks the doors.
Frequently asked questions
How many remotes can the SX4 store?
European cars hold three transmitter codes; US and Canadian cars hold four. In both cases the memory is wiped when a new code is programmed, so register every remote you want to keep in one session.
Can I program a keyless-start (push-button) fob at home?
On US-market cars the keyless-start remote is registered with the in-car sequence above. On European cars the keyless-start controller is coded through the control module and needs Suzuki diagnostic equipment — only the standard keyless-entry remote can be self-programmed there.
The remote programmed but the car still won’t start with it — why?
Remote programming only handles the door locks. The immobiliser transponder inside the key is separate and must be registered by a dealer, so a blank key blade will lock the doors but not start the engine until the transponder is coded.
If an immobiliser or security warning appears while programming, look the exact dashboard symbol up on autodtcs.com before continuing.
