Automatic (CVT) versions of the Suzuki SX4 S-Cross (JY, 2013–2021) use an electrically operated park-lock, so if the 12 V battery goes flat you can’t move the selector out of P the normal way. There’s a manual shift-lock release built in for exactly this.
Try Jump-Starting First
A discharged 12 V battery is the usual cause, and restoring power often frees the selector on its own — see our S-Cross jump-start guide. If it still won’t shift, use the release below.
How to Release the Shift Lock

- Apply the parking brake firmly.
- Stop the engine, then set the key or ignition mode to ON or ACC.
- Prise off the small cover beside the selector (just to the left of the P marking) using a flat-bladed screwdriver wrapped in a soft cloth so you don’t scratch the trim.
- Push the release button inside the slot with the key (or a thin flat rod). Holding it down, press the button on the selector and move it out of P to the position you want.
This is for emergency use only. If you need it more than once, or it doesn’t work as described, have the car checked — the park-lock or 12 V system needs attention.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my S-Cross stuck in Park?
Almost always a flat or weak 12 V battery cutting power to the electric park-lock. Jump-start it first; if that doesn’t free the selector, use the manual shift-lock release.
Where is the shift-lock release on the SX4 S-Cross?
Under a small removable cover on the selector surround, just left of the P position. Lift the cover and press the button inside with your key.
Do I need to press the brake as well?
Set the parking brake for safety. The release works with the ignition in ON/ACC; you don’t need the engine running.
It keeps sticking in Park — is that normal?
No. Repeated sticking points to a failing 12 V battery or a park-lock fault — get it diagnosed rather than relying on the manual release.
If a warning light is showing as well, look the code up on autodtcs.com. To rule out the battery, see our S-Cross battery guide.
