If the remote for your Suzuki SX4 S-Cross (JY, 2013–2021) stops locking or unlocking the doors — usually a dead fob battery — you can still get in. Every S-Cross remote has a mechanical key hidden inside it, and the driver’s door has a real lock to use it.
How to Unlock the Car
- Take the mechanical key out of the remote — pull it free from the fob (there’s a small release).
- Go to the driver’s door lock. If the lock is hidden under a small cover on the handle, pop the cover off first.
- Insert the key and turn the top of the key toward the front of the car to unlock all the doors (turning it toward the rear locks them).
- Open the door and get in. The same key in the driver’s door also locks and unlocks the tailgate.
Now Start It
On a keyless (push-button start) S-Cross, a dead fob won’t start the car the normal way either — but there’s a backup: see our start with a dead key fob guide. The permanent fix is a fresh fob cell (a CR2032) — see replace the key-fob battery.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the mechanical key on an S-Cross?
Inside the remote itself. Slide the release and pull the metal key blade out of the fob.
My key won’t turn in the door — which way unlocks it?
Turn the top of the key toward the front of the car to unlock, toward the rear to lock. If there’s a cap over the lock on the handle, remove it first.
The doors unlocked but the car won’t start — why?
The push-start system still needs to detect the fob. Use the dead-fob start method (touching the fob to the start switch), then replace the fob battery.
Is this how thieves get in?
No — this only works with your own registered key, and the immobiliser still blocks a start without the matching fob. It’s simply the factory backup for a dead remote.
