These instructions apply to the Suzuki SX4 S-Cross Mk1 (JY) 2013-2021.

A flat 12 V battery is the most common reason a Suzuki SX4 S-Cross (JY, 2013–2021) won’t start — and on the automatic (CVT) it also locks the selector in Park. With jumper leads and a healthy 12 V donor you can get going in minutes, but the connection order matters.
Before You Start
- Use only a 12 V donor battery. Set both cars’ parking brakes and don’t let the vehicles touch.
- Never jump a battery that looks frozen — it can rupture.
- Keep sparks and flames away; batteries give off flammable hydrogen gas.
- Switch off all accessories except hazards/headlights if needed for safety.
How to Connect the Leads
- Connect the first lead to the positive (+) terminal of the flat battery.
- Connect the other end to the positive (+) terminal of the donor battery.
- Connect the second lead to the negative (−) terminal of the donor battery.
- Make the final connection to a bare, unpainted metal part of the flat car’s engine — Suzuki specifies the engine mount bracket. Do not connect it to the flat battery’s negative terminal (risk of explosion).
- Start the donor car and run it at a moderate speed, then start the S-Cross.
Once it’s running, remove the leads in the exact reverse order (4 → 3 → 2 → 1).
Don’t Push- or Tow-Start It
Never bump-start the S-Cross — it can permanently damage the catalytic converter, and the CVT automatic can’t be started that way at all. Always use jumper leads.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where do I attach the last (negative) clip?
To a clean, unpainted metal part of the engine — the engine mount bracket — not the flat battery’s negative post. That keeps sparks away from the battery.
My S-Cross is stuck in Park after going flat — why?
The electric park-lock loses power with a dead battery. Jump-starting usually frees it; if not, use the manual shift-lock release.
Can I use a lithium jump pack?
Yes — any 12 V pack works. Follow the same order and attach the negative to an engine ground, not the battery.
It started, then went flat again — what now?
The battery isn’t holding charge or the alternator isn’t charging. Drive to recharge; if it repeats, have the battery and charging system tested.
If a warning light stays on after the jump, look the code up on autodtcs.com. To disconnect the battery safely, see our S-Cross battery guide.
