Open the Fuel Filler Door

These instructions apply to the Suzuki SX4 S-Cross Mk1 (JY) 2013-2021.

The fuel filler door on the Suzuki SX4 S-Cross (JY, 2013–2021) has no push-panel on the outside — it’s released from inside the car. If you’re new to the S-Cross or at an unfamiliar pump, here’s where the release is and how the cap works.

How to Open It

  1. The filler door is on the left rear of the car.
  2. Pull up the fuel-lid opener lever on the outboard side of the driver’s seat (nearest the door).
  3. Go to the door, open it, and turn the cap anticlockwise to remove it — do this slowly, as the fuel may be under pressure.
  4. Rest the cap in the holder on the door while you refuel.

Closing It

Refit the cap and turn it clockwise until you hear several clicks — that confirms it’s sealed — then push the filler door shut. A cap that isn’t clicked home is a common cause of a fuel-system warning light.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the fuel-door release on an SX4 S-Cross?

A pull-up lever on the outboard side of the driver’s seat, next to the door sill. There’s no button on the outside of the car.

The door won’t open when I pull the lever — what now?

Make sure the car is unlocked, then pull the lever fully. In cold weather the door can freeze shut — press on it to break any ice rather than forcing it.

Which way does the fuel cap turn?

Anticlockwise to remove (slowly — it may be pressurised), clockwise until it clicks several times to seal.

Why is my fuel-cap warning light on?

Usually a cap that wasn’t tightened until it clicked. Re-seat it clockwise until it clicks and the light should clear after a few drives.

If a fuel-system or check-engine light comes on after refuelling, look the code up on autodtcs.com.
