If the 12 V battery in your Suzuki SX4 S-Cross (JY, 2013–2021) is flat, the electric tailgate latch won’t release from the button — leaving you locked out of the boot. There’s a built-in emergency release you reach from inside the car.
How to Open the Tailgate From Inside
- Get into the cabin and fold the rear seat forward (lift out the luggage-compartment cover first, if fitted) so you can reach the back of the tailgate.
- On the inner tailgate trim, find the small emergency-release lever (there’s an access opening for it).
- Using a flat-bladed screwdriver or the jack handle, push the lever up — the tailgate unlatches and swings open.
It re-latches normally the next time you close it, so nothing needs resetting.
Can’t Find a Lever? Jump-Start Instead
Not every S-Cross is fitted with the interior emergency release. Because the tailgate latch is electric-only, the mechanical door key can’t pop it open — it only changes the lock state. So if there’s no lever or access hole behind the tailgate trim, the reliable way in is to restore power: jump-start the car, then open the boot with the switch as normal.
Do This Safely
Make sure no one is standing behind the tailgate before you push the lever — it opens as soon as it releases. Work on level ground. If the button still won’t open the tailgate once the battery is recharged, have it inspected rather than relying on the emergency release each time.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why won’t my S-Cross boot open?
The tailgate latch is electric, so a flat or weak 12 V battery (or a latch fault) stops the button working. Use the interior emergency lever, then sort the battery.
Where is the tailgate emergency release?
On the inside face of the tailgate, reached by folding the rear seat forward. Push the lever up with a screwdriver or the jack handle.
Will using it damage anything?
No — it’s the factory emergency release. The tailgate simply re-latches when you close it.
The button still won’t work after charging the battery — now what?
That points to a latch or wiring fault rather than the battery. Have it checked so you’re not reliant on the manual release.
