If the F.A.S.T.-key (keyless remote) for your Mitsubishi Outlander (GF, 2012–2021) stops working — usually a dead fob battery — you can still get in. Every F.A.S.T.-key has an emergency key built inside it, and the driver’s door has a real lock to use it.
How to Unlock the Car
- Slide the release (lock knob) on the F.A.S.T.-key and pull the emergency key out of the fob.
- Insert the emergency key into the driver’s door lock and turn it to unlock the door.
- Open the door and get in. Turn the key back to centre and remove it.
- Reinsert the emergency key into the F.A.S.T.-key afterwards so you don’t lose it.
Now Start It
A dead fob won’t start the Outlander the normal way either — but there’s a backup using the key slot on the instrument panel: see our start with a dead key fob guide. The proper fix is a fresh fob battery — see replace the key-fob battery.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the emergency key on an Outlander?
Inside the F.A.S.T.-key itself. Release the catch and slide the metal emergency key out of the fob.
The doors unlocked but the car won’t start — why?
The keyless system still needs to detect the fob. Insert the F.A.S.T.-key into the key slot on the instrument panel to start, then replace the fob battery.
Only the driver’s door opens with the key — is that normal?
Yes — the emergency key works the driver’s door lock; from there you can unlock the rest from inside.
Does this let a thief in?
No — it only works with your own programmed key, and the electronic immobiliser still blocks any start without the matching fob. It’s simply the factory backup for a dead remote.
