Reset the Service Indicator

After an oil and filter change the Renault Trafic III (X82, 2014–2021) keeps counting down its service reminder until you reset it from the instrument panel. It takes about a minute with the ignition on and no tool — here is the exact button sequence and what the display should show at each step.

Before You Start

  • Only reset after the service (oil and filter) is actually done — the counter tells the next owner or garage when work is due.
  • Turn the ignition on but do not start the engine (position where the dash lights up).
  • Find the two trip-computer controls: button 1 scrolls through the display readouts, button 2 is the one you press and hold to reset. Depending on your dashboard these sit on the instrument panel or the end of the right-hand stalk.

Reset the Service Indicator on the Renault Trafic III

  1. Turn the ignition on — do not start the engine.
  2. Press button 1 repeatedly to scroll through the trip-computer list and select the ‘Mileage before service’ (distance-to-service) readout.
  3. Press and hold button 2 for about 5 seconds — the display shows the remaining distance until the next service.
  4. Keep holding, or press and hold button 2 again for about 10 seconds, until the distance resets to the full service interval.
  5. Turn the ignition off. The service reminder is cleared — switch back on to confirm the spanner symbol has gone and the full interval is shown.

The same procedure applies across the X82 range, including the mechanically identical Fiat Talento, Nissan NV300 / Primastar and Vauxhall/Opel Vivaro sold on this platform. The heavily revised 2021-on Trafic uses a different dashboard — check on-screen prompts if your menu looks different.

If the Reminder Doesn’t Clear

Make sure the ignition is on with the engine off, and that you selected the ‘Mileage before service’ readout before holding — holding on the wrong screen does nothing. Hold button 2 firmly for the full time; releasing early cancels the reset. If the spanner still shows after a correct sequence, the service schedule may include a separate time-based (annual) item that a Renault dealer or garage tool clears — the distance counter, though, resets with the steps above.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you reset the service light on a Renault Trafic?

Ignition on (engine off), scroll with button 1 to the ‘Mileage before service’ readout, then press and hold button 2 — about 5 seconds to show the distance, then around 10 seconds to reset it to the full interval. Turn the ignition off to finish.

Do I need a diagnostic tool?

No. On the Trafic III (2014–2021) the service/oil reminder resets from the dashboard buttons with no scanner. Only reset it once the oil has actually been changed.

Is the Fiat Talento service reset the same?

Yes. The Fiat Talento, Nissan NV300/Primastar and Vauxhall/Opel Vivaro share the same X82 platform and instrument panel, so the button sequence above is identical on all of them.

Why won’t my Trafic service light turn off?

Almost always the wrong display was selected or button 2 wasn’t held long enough. Re-select ‘Mileage before service’ and hold the reset button for the full time. A remaining light after a correct reset usually points to a separate annual/time-based service item.

When should I reset it?

Only after the oil and filter service is done. Resetting without doing the work leaves the van thinking it has fresh oil when it hasn’t, which risks running past the safe interval.

If a warning light or fault code appeared alongside the service reminder, look it up on autodtcs.com.
