Disconnecting the 12 volt battery on a Renault Trafic III (X82, 2014–2021) — to change it, store the van, or work on the electrics — is straightforward, but the order matters and a few things need setting up again afterwards. The battery is in the engine compartment. Here is the safe sequence.
Before You Disconnect
- Have your audio security code to hand — the radio may ask for it after power is restored.
- Switch off everything electrical and remove the key so the van is fully asleep.
- Wait for the engine cooling fan to stop, then wait a further 5 minutes so the systems power down.
- On start/stop vans, deactivate the start/stop system first.
Disconnect and Reconnect
- Open the bonnet and find the battery in the engine bay.
- Disconnect the negative (−) terminal first, then the positive (+). Taking the earth off first avoids a short if a spanner touches bodywork.
- Do your work, or fit the new battery the same way round.
- Reconnect the positive (+) first, then the negative (−), and make sure both clamps are tight.
After Reconnecting
Cutting the power loses some stored settings, so put these back:
- Date and time.
- Radio — re-enter the security code if asked, and reset your stations and preferences.
- Tyre pressure monitoring — re-initialise it (ignition on, select ‘Tyre pressure’, hold to confirm, then drive).
- Electric windows — re-initialise the one-touch function by holding each window fully closed for a second.
- On start/stop vans, re-activate the start/stop system.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the battery on a Renault Trafic?
In the engine compartment — open the bonnet to reach the terminals.
Which terminal do I take off first?
Negative (−) first when disconnecting; positive (+) first when reconnecting. That order keeps any accidental spark away from the earth path.
What do I lose when I disconnect the battery?
The clock, radio settings and some one-touch functions. Expect to reset the time and radio, re-initialise the electric windows and the tyre-pressure system, and re-enable start/stop afterwards.
Is it the same on the Fiat Talento, Nissan NV300 and Vauxhall Vivaro?
Yes — same X82 platform and engine-bay battery, so the disconnect order and the after-reset list are identical.
