Opening the bonnet on a Renault Trafic III (X82, 2014–2021) is a two-stage job: an interior release handle pops the catch, then an exterior safety tab at the front lets it lift. If the handle pulls with no resistance and nothing happens, the release cable or latch has likely failed — covered below.
Open the Bonnet
- Inside the cab, pull the bonnet release handle (1) — it’s low down in the driver’s footwell area by the door. The bonnet pops up slightly at the front.
- Go to the front of the van and push the safety tab (2) to the left as you lift the bonnet — this releases the secondary catch.
- Lift the bonnet, helping it up; the gas struts hold it open (there’s no manual prop rod to fit).
- Before reaching into the engine bay, make sure the wiper stalk is in the park position so the wipers can’t be triggered.
Closing It Safely
- Check nothing has been left in the engine bay and that no gravel or cloth is on the catch.
- Lower the bonnet to about 30 cm above closed, then let it drop so it latches under its own weight.
- Give the front edge a gentle push and check it’s properly locked — don’t drive off with it merely resting on the safety catch.
If the Bonnet Won’t Open
If the interior handle pulls loose with no tension, the release cable has snapped or come off — a known wear point. First try again with a helper pressing down on the front of the bonnet (or gently lifting it) while you pull the handle, which can free a catch that’s just binding. If the cable is genuinely broken, the latch has to be released directly at the front of the van — reached from underneath or through the grille — which is a careful job best done slowly to avoid bending the bonnet or panel. Once open, replace the cable so you’re not caught out again.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the bonnet release on a Renault Trafic?
Inside the cab, low in the driver’s footwell area by the door — pull handle 1. Then release the exterior safety tab (2) at the front by pushing it left as you lift.
My Trafic bonnet won’t open — what now?
If the handle has gone slack the cable has likely failed. Have someone press down on or lift the bonnet while you pull the handle; if that doesn’t work the latch must be freed from the front, from below or through the grille, then the cable renewed.
How is the bonnet held open?
By gas struts — lift it and it stays up on its own, with no prop rod to fit. If it won’t stay up, the struts are worn and should be replaced.
Is it the same on the Fiat Talento, Nissan NV300 and Vauxhall Vivaro?
Yes — the same X82 body, so the release handle, safety tab and struts work the same way.
