A Ford Kuga Mk2 (2013–2019) remote that needs a close press, or that shows “Key battery low”, usually just needs a fresh CR2032 coin cell. It is a two-minute job with the emergency key blade and a small screwdriver.
How to change the Kuga Mk2 key fob battery
- Slide the release catch and pull the metal emergency key blade out of the fob.
- Using the slot the blade leaves (or the case seam), gently prise the two halves of the fob apart with a small flat screwdriver.
- Lift out the old coin cell — it is a CR2032.
- Fit the new CR2032 with the positive (+) side facing down, toward the buttons. Try not to touch the flat faces with your fingers.
- Clip the case back together and slide the key blade home.
- Test lock and unlock. If the fob had stopped working completely, you can still start the car using the steering-column backup slot.
Frequently Asked Questions
What battery does the Kuga Mk2 key take?
A single CR2032 coin cell.
Which way does the battery go in?
Positive (+) side down, facing the buttons.
Do I need to reprogram the fob afterwards?
No — a battery change keeps the existing coding. Programming a new or blank key is a dealer job that needs Ford diagnostic equipment.
The range is still short with a new cell.
Check the cell is seated and the contacts are clean. Radio interference near the car can also cut range even with a good battery.
