The first-generation Ford Kuga (2008–2012) carries its 12-volt battery in the engine bay. Disconnecting it is simple, but the car needs a short relearn drive and a few settings reset afterwards — here is the safe order to do it in.
How to disconnect and reconnect the Kuga Mk1 battery
- Apply the handbrake, turn the ignition off and close the doors. Check the lights, heater and audio are all off.
- Note your audio unit’s security code if it has one, in case it is asked for once power is restored.
- Open the bonnet — the battery is in the engine compartment. Remove the negative (−) terminal first, then the positive (+). If you’ll work near airbags or belt pretensioners, wait 3 minutes after disconnecting.
- To reconnect, fit the positive (+) terminal first, then the negative (−), and tighten both with the ignition off.
- Reset the clock and date, then start the engine and let it reach normal running temperature (about 3 minutes).
- Briefly hold around 1,200 rpm for 2 minutes, then take a short drive of about 8 km (5 miles) so the engine and transmission relearn their idle and adaptation.
- Re-initialise the power windows (and the panoramic roof, if fitted) so one-touch works again.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the battery on a Ford Kuga Mk1?
In the engine compartment.
Which terminal comes off first?
Negative (−) first when disconnecting; positive (+) first when reconnecting.
Why does it need a relearn drive?
After losing power the engine control unit re-learns its idle and fuelling. The short drive lets it settle, which is why the car may idle slightly roughly at first.
My windows won’t auto-close now.
The one-touch memory is wiped when power is removed — re-initialise each window to restore it.
If a warning lamp appears after reconnecting, look up the code on autodtcs.com.
