These instructions apply to the Ford Kuga Mk1 (C394) 2008-2012.

A Ford Kuga Mk1 (2008–2012) remote that needs a close press, or that’s getting unreliable, usually just needs a fresh CR2032 coin cell in the flip key. It is a two-minute job with a small screwdriver.

How to change the Kuga Mk1 key fob battery

  1. Flip out and remove the metal key blade from the transmitter key.
  2. Remove the key cover, gently prising the case apart at the seam with a small flat screwdriver.
  3. Lift out the old coin cell — it is a CR2032.
  4. Fit the new CR2032 with the positive (+) side facing down, without touching the flat faces with your fingers.
  5. Refit the cover and clip the case together.
  6. Refit the key blade and test lock and unlock.

Frequently Asked Questions

What battery does the Kuga Mk1 key take?

A single CR2032 coin cell.

Which way does the battery go in?

Positive (+) side down.

Do I need to reprogram the key afterwards?

No — a battery change keeps the existing coding. Programming a new remote is a dealer job that needs Ford diagnostic equipment (up to eight remotes can be paired to the car).

The range is still short with a new cell.

Check the cell is seated and the contacts are clean. Radio interference near the car can also cut range even with a good battery.

If the car shows a key or immobiliser warning, decode it on autodtcs.com.
