On the Audi Q5 (8R, 2008–2017) the 12V battery lives in the luggage compartment, under the boot floor — not the engine bay. Disconnecting it is straightforward, but note the radio code and window steps below so nothing catches you out afterwards.
How to Disconnect and Reconnect the Q5 Battery
- Note your radio/infotainment security code if you have it, and have the key out of the car.
- Switch off all electrical consumers and turn the ignition off.
- Open the boot and lift out the luggage-compartment floor carpet to reach the battery.
- Disconnect the negative (earth) terminal first, then the positive if needed.
- Do your work. To reconnect, fit the positive first, then the negative, and tighten both.
- Switch the ignition on and let the systems settle before starting.
After Reconnecting
- Re-initialize the electric windows (close each, then hold the switch up briefly) — one-touch and anti-trap are disabled until you do.
- Re-enter the radio code if prompted, and reset the clock.
- Expect the auto start-stop and some comfort features to need a short drive to re-learn.
Jump-Starting Instead
If you only need a jump, don’t reach into the boot — the Q5 has dedicated jump-start terminals in the engine compartment. Use the positive post under its cover and an earth point, which is safer than clamping onto the boot battery.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the battery on an Audi Q5 8R?
Under the floor of the luggage compartment. Lift the boot carpet to reach it; the jump-start posts are separate, in the engine bay.
Will disconnecting the battery reset the service light?
No — the service interval is stored in the car’s modules and is unaffected. Use the MMI oil-service reset for that.
If a warning light stays on after reconnecting, look the code up on autodtcs.com.
