Many Audi Q5 (8R, 2008–2017) models have no engine dipstick — you check the oil level electronically through the MMI. Here’s how to read it correctly, and what to do if your car still has a dipstick tube.
How to Check the Oil Level on an Audi Q5 (8R)
- Park on level ground and run the engine until it’s at normal temperature, then switch it off.
- Wait about 5 minutes for the oil to drain back into the sump.
- Switch the ignition on.
- Press the CAR button and open Servicing and checks (labelled Service & Control on some cars).
- Select Oil level and read the on-screen gauge. Top up in small amounts if it reads low, then re-check.
If Your Q5 Has a Dipstick
Later and some-market 8R engines kept a dipstick tube but use a special Audi gauge (T40178) rather than a marked stick. If you have an ordinary dipstick, read it in the usual way with the engine warm, off and level, after a 5-minute wait.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Audi Q5 have a dipstick?
Many 8R Q5s do not — the oil level is shown electronically in the MMI. Some engines retained a dipstick tube; check your engine bay.
Why does the oil reading look wrong?
The electronic gauge needs the engine warm, switched off, the car level and a few minutes’ wait. Checking cold or too soon after switch-off gives a false low or high reading.
If an oil-pressure or oil-level fault light appears, don’t keep driving — check the code on autodtcs.com.
