A sluggish remote or a “key battery low” message on the Audi Q5 (8R, 2008–2017) usually just needs a fresh CR2032 coin cell. You can swap it in a couple of minutes with no tools.
How to Replace the Q5 Key Fob Battery
- Press and hold the small catch (button A) on the fob and pull out the mechanical emergency key (B).
- With the key removed, slide off the button-cell cover (C) from the fob.
- Lift out the old CR2032 coin cell.
- Fit the new cell with the positive (+) side facing down, as the old one sat.
- Refit the cover and slide the mechanical key back in until it clicks.
- Check the remote locks and unlocks the car.
Notes
- Use a quality CR2032 — cheap cells can read “low” again quickly.
- Try not to touch the flat faces of the new battery; skin oils shorten its life.
Frequently Asked Questions
What battery does the Audi Q5 key fob take?
A single CR2032 3V coin cell, fitted positive-side down.
Do I need to reprogram the key after changing the battery?
No — a battery swap doesn’t affect programming. (Programming a new key is a different job that needs Audi diagnostic equipment, so it’s a dealer or auto-locksmith task.)
The remote still won’t work with a new battery — now what?
You can still get in and drive: use the emergency key blade in the door, then hold the fob against the start button (or the slot where fitted) to start. Have the fob checked if it stays dead.
