These instructions apply to the BMW X5 Mk2 (E70) 2006-2013.

If the automatic BMW X5 (E70, 2006–2013) loses power or develops a selector fault, the gear lever can stay locked in P and the car won’t roll. There’s a manual release under the center-console trim you can use to recover the car.
How to Release the X5 (E70) Selector from Park
- Apply the parking brake or chock the wheels — the car can roll once Park releases.
- Depress the brake pedal.
- Remove the center-console cover, lift out the cup holder, then remove the cover beneath it to expose the release.
- Insert the emergency release tool (from the vehicle tool kit) into the hole, turn it and press as marked.
- Move the selector out of P so the car can be pushed or trailered.
Important
- Secure the car first — once Park is released the transmission no longer holds it.
- Have the cause checked by a specialist afterward; needing the manual release usually points to an electrical or selector fault.
- If the battery is simply flat, charging or jump-starting it often restores normal operation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why won’t my X5 come out of Park?
The shift-lock is electric; with no power or a fault it stays locked. The manual release under the cup holder lets you move the lever to recover the car.
Where’s the release tool?
In the vehicle tool kit (often in the tailgate). The release point is under the center-console cup holder behind a small cover.
