If the automatic BMW X5 (F15, 2013–2019) loses drive power or develops a selector fault, the eight-speed gearbox can stay in P and the car won’t roll. There’s an owner emergency release that puts it into neutral so the car can be recovered.
How to Release the X5 (F15) Gearbox from Park
- Apply the parking brake or chock the wheels — the car can roll once it’s in N.
- Press and hold the brake pedal.
- Press the Start/Stop button to operate the starter (do not start the engine). If needed, remove the fuel-pump fuse first to prevent starting.
- Press and hold the selector unlock button, move the selector toward N and hold for about 2 seconds, then release. Repeat once.
- When the display shows N, the parking lock is released. Keep the brake held until the car is secured or being moved.
Important
- Secure the car first — in N the gearbox no longer holds it.
- Have the cause checked afterward; needing the emergency release points to an electrical or selector fault.
- If the battery is simply flat, charging or jump-starting it usually restores normal selector operation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why won’t my X5 F15 come out of Park?
The parking lock is electronic; with low power or a fault it stays engaged. The brake-and-N emergency sequence releases it so the car can be moved.
Do I need a tool?
No — it’s a pedal-and-selector sequence. You may need to pull the fuel-pump fuse to stop the engine starting while you operate the starter.
