Disconnect and Reconnect the 12V Battery

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 2, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the BMW X5 Mk4 (G05) 2018-Present.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

On the BMW X5 (G05, 2018–present) the 12V battery is in the luggage compartment (right-hand side, under the floor/trim) — not the engine bay. Follow the order and after-steps below so nothing is left disabled.

How to Disconnect and Reconnect the X5 (G05) Battery

  1. Switch everything off, make sure the key is away from the car, and the ignition is off.
  2. Open the tailgate and lift the boot floor / remove the right-side trim to reach the battery.
  3. Disconnect the negative (earth) terminal first, then the positive if required.
  4. Do your work. To reconnect, fit the positive first, then the negative, and tighten both.
  5. Switch the ignition on and let the car settle for a minute before starting.

After Reconnecting

  • The CBS service clock stops while the battery is off — check the date/time is correct.
  • Re-initialize the windows/sunroof if one-touch has stopped (close, then hold the switch up briefly).
  • Driver-assistance and comfort features may need a short drive to re-calibrate.

Jump-Starting Instead

For a jump, don’t open the boot panel — use the dedicated positive jump terminal in the engine compartment (under a cover) and an engine earth point. It’s safer than reaching the boot battery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the battery on a BMW X5 G05?

In the luggage compartment on the right, under the floor/trim. The jump-start posts are separate, in the engine bay.

Will disconnecting the battery reset the service light?

No — CBS data is stored in the car. Use the trip-button CBS reset for the service light.

If a warning stays on after reconnecting, look the code up on autodtcs.com.
