Check the Engine Oil Level

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 2, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the BMW X5 Mk4 (G05) 2018-Present.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

The BMW X5 (G05, 2018–present) has no engine dipstick — you check the oil level electronically through the iDrive screen, with the engine running and warm. Here’s how to read it correctly.

How to Check the Oil Level on a BMW X5 (G05)

  1. Drive the car until the engine is at normal operating temperature.
  2. Park on a level surface and leave the engine running (don’t touch the accelerator).
  3. On iDrive select CAR, then Vehicle status.
  4. Open the oil level display and let the reading settle.
  5. Top up in small amounts if it reads low, wait, then re-check — don’t overfill.

Why There’s No Dipstick

BMW uses an electronic oil-level sensor shown in iDrive instead of a dipstick. The reading needs the engine warm, running and the car level, which is why a cold or just-started check can look wrong.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the BMW X5 G05 have a dipstick?

No — the oil level is read electronically through iDrive. There is no manual dipstick to pull.

Why does my oil reading look wrong?

The sensor needs the engine warm and running, on level ground. Checking cold, on a slope, or revving gives a false reading.

If an oil-level or oil-pressure warning appears, don’t keep driving — check the code on autodtcs.com.
