These instructions apply to the BMW X5 Mk4 (G05) 2018-Present.

A weak remote or “key battery low” message on the BMW X5 (G05, 2018–present) usually just needs a fresh CR2032 coin cell — unless you have the optional touchscreen Display Key, which is rechargeable.
How to Replace the X5 (G05) Key Fob Battery
- Press the release and slide out the metal emergency key blade from the fob.
- Slide off the key cover / open the case where the blade sat.
- Lift out the old CR2032 coin cell.
- Fit the new cell with the positive (+) side facing up, as the old one sat.
- Refit the cover and slide the emergency key back in, then check the remote works.
If You Have the Display Key
The optional BMW Display Key (small touchscreen fob) is rechargeable — there’s no coin cell to change. Charge it on the wireless charging tray or with the supplied charger. If it goes flat, use the standard fob or the emergency blade.
Frequently Asked Questions
What battery does the BMW X5 G05 key take?
The standard remote uses a CR2032 3V coin cell, fitted positive-side up. (This is the slimmer G-series key; older X5s used a CR2450.) The optional Display Key is rechargeable.
Do I need to reprogram the key after changing the battery?
No — a battery swap doesn’t affect programming. A lost or replacement key must be ordered from a dealer and coded with a diagnostic tool.
Remote still dead with a new battery?
Use the emergency blade to unlock, then hold the fob against the start button to start, and have the key checked.
