Replace the Cabin (Pollen) Filter

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 2, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the BMW X5 Mk2 (E70) 2006-2013.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

The BMW X5 (E70, 2006–2013) has two cabin (microfilter) elements, and they’re not behind the glovebox — they sit under the scuttle cover at the base of the windscreen, on the passenger side of the engine bay. It’s a no-tools job once the cover is off.

How to Replace the X5 (E70) Cabin Filter

  1. Open the hood. On the passenger side, at the base of the windscreen, find the plastic microfilter cover in the scuttle/cowl trim.
  2. Release the cover’s clips/quarter-turn fasteners and lift it away.
  3. You’ll see the filter housing — squeeze the plastic clips at each end of the holder and withdraw the two filter elements.
  4. Note the airflow arrow on each filter, then slide the new filters in the same way round.
  5. Refit the holder, clip the scuttle cover back down and check it’s seated.

Good to Know

  • There are two filter elements — replace both as a pair.
  • Fit them with the airflow arrow pointing the correct way or airflow and filtration suffer.
  • A typical interval is around every 2 years / 20,000–30,000 miles, sooner if you get musty air or weak airflow.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the cabin filter on a BMW X5 E70?

Under the scuttle/cowl cover at the base of the windscreen, passenger side of the engine bay — not behind the glovebox. There are two elements side by side.

How many cabin filters does the E70 have?

Two. Change them together so both halves of the airflow are freshly filtered.

Do I need tools?

Usually not — the scuttle cover and filter holder use hand-release clips. Work gently so the plastic clips don’t snap, especially in cold weather.

If weak airflow comes with a blower or climate fault, look the code up on our sister site autodtcs.com.
