These instructions apply to the BMW X5 Mk2 (E70) 2006-2013.

Which bulb your BMW X5 (E70, 2006–2013) takes depends on whether it has halogen or bi-xenon headlamps. Halogen cars use a H7 dipped and main beam that you can change yourself from the engine bay; bi-xenon cars use a D1S HID unit that’s a more involved, higher-voltage job.
Bulb Types
- Halogen headlamps: dipped (low) beam H7; main (high) beam H7.
- Bi-xenon headlamps: D1S xenon (HID) for the main dipped/main function — high-voltage; many owners leave this to a specialist.
- Indicators and side/parking bulbs differ again — check the holder you remove.
How to Change a Halogen (H7) Headlight Bulb
- Switch everything off and open the hood. Work on one side at a time.
- At the back of the headlight, remove the round access cover for the bulb you’re changing (dipped and main have separate covers).
- Unclip the wiring connector, release the spring clip holding the bulb and withdraw it.
- Fit the new H7 without touching the glass (hold it by the base; skin oil shortens bulb life). Locate it on its tabs and refit the spring clip.
- Reconnect the plug, refit the cover and test the light before closing up.
Bi-Xenon (D1S) Note
If your X5 has xenon headlamps, the bulb is a D1S HID. It runs at high voltage, lives behind an igniter/ballast, and should be handled with the lights off and care taken — many owners have these done by a specialist. Always replace xenon bulbs in pairs so the color stays matched.
Frequently Asked Questions
What headlight bulb does a BMW X5 E70 take?
Halogen cars use H7 for both dipped and main beam; bi-xenon cars use a D1S xenon unit. Check which headlamp you have before buying.
Can I change the E70 headlight bulb myself?
The H7 halogen bulbs are a straightforward engine-bay job. The D1S xenon is higher-voltage and fiddlier — fine to DIY with care, but many leave it to a specialist, and always do xenons in pairs.
If a bulb-out or adaptive-headlight warning stays on after fitting a good bulb, look the code up on autodtcs.com.
