If your Mazda CX-5 Mk1 (KE, 2012–2017) won’t crank and the battery is flat, you can jump-start it from another 12-volt car. The 12V battery sits in the engine bay under a cover; there is no remote jump terminal, so you connect to the battery’s own posts and to a bare metal ground point on the car.
Before You Start
- Use only a 12-volt donor — never a 24V source, which will destroy the CX-5’s electronics.
- Park the donor car close but not touching, both engines off, both handbrakes on.
- Remove the CX-5’s battery cover to reach the terminals.
How to Jump-Start the CX-5
- Connect one end of the red (+) lead to the positive post of the flat battery.
- Connect the other red end to the positive post of the donor battery.
- Connect the black (−) lead to the negative post of the donor battery.
- Connect the other black end to a bare metal ground point on the CX-5 engine or body, away from the battery — not to the flat battery’s negative post.
- Start the donor car and let it run for a few minutes.
- Start the CX-5. Once it is running, remove the leads in the exact reverse order (ground point first), then refit the battery cover.
Keep all leads clear of the cooling fan and belts, and never jump-start a battery that is frozen or visibly damaged.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where do I connect the ground lead?
To a clean, unpainted metal bolt or bracket on the engine or body, as far from the battery as the lead reaches. This keeps any spark away from battery gases.
Why won’t i-stop work after a jump-start?
The SKYACTIV i-stop auto start-stop needs a healthy, charged battery. After a jump or a deep discharge it stays disabled until the battery recharges — this is normal, not a fault.
How long should I drive afterward?
Drive for at least 20–30 minutes, or use a charger, so the battery recovers. If it goes flat again, have the battery and charging system tested.
