Service Light & Reset Guide

Many owners search for a way to “reset the service light” on a 2011–2017 Kia Picanto after an oil change. The short answer is that this generation has no owner-resettable service reminder in the instrument cluster — here is what that means and what to check instead.

The TA has no electronic service counter

Unlike the later Mk3 (JA) Picanto, the TA’s Supervision cluster does not run a countdown to the next service and does not show a spanner/wrench reminder that the owner clears after a service. Servicing is interval-based, not triggered by a dashboard message.

That means after a DIY oil and filter change there is nothing to reset on the dashboard. The maintenance clock lives in your service book, not in the car’s software.

The maintenance interval

Kia’s European schedule for the Picanto TA is a service every 15,000 km (10,000 miles) or 12 months, whichever comes first. Shorter intervals apply under severe use (short trips, dusty roads, heavy stop-start driving).

Record the date and mileage in the maintenance booklet each time, since the car will not remind you.

If a warning light is actually on

Because there is no service reminder, a light that stays on after you start the Picanto is reporting a real condition, not a service interval. Identify the symbol before clearing anything:

  • Oil-can symbol: this is the oil pressure warning, not a service reminder. Stop the engine and check the oil level.
  • Engine (check-engine) symbol: a stored fault code. It will not reset from the dash — the fault must be read and cleared with a scan tool.
  • Battery, ABS or airbag symbols: system faults that need diagnosis, not a reset.

Frequently asked questions

How do I reset the service light on my 2012–2016 Picanto?

There is no service light to reset on the TA generation. If a message appeared after a battery disconnect, cycle the ignition; if a warning symbol remains, read it with a code reader rather than trying to clear it from the cluster.

Why does my dealer “reset” something at a service then?

The dealer stamps your service book and, on cars so equipped, updates records in their system — but the TA cluster itself has no owner service counter to zero.

Does the Mk3 Picanto have a resettable service light?

Yes. The 2017-onward JA Picanto does show a service reminder that can be reset through the cluster menu; the TA does not.

If a check-engine light is on and you want to know what the stored code means, look it up at autodtcs.com.
