Replace a Headlight Bulb

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 6, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Honda CR-V Mk3 (RE) 2007-2012.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Headlight bulbs on the Honda CR-V (RE, 2007-2012) are reached from behind the headlight in the engine bay. The low and high beams are separate bulbs. Handle halogen bulbs by the base only.

Replace the bulb

  1. Open the hood. On the driver’s side, lift out the under-hood fuse box from its stay to reach the bulb; on the passenger’s side, lift out the coolant reserve tank from its holder.
  2. Pull the electrical connector straight off the back of the bulb.
  3. Remove the rubber weather seal by its tab.
  4. Unclip the spring hold-down wire, pivot it aside and withdraw the bulb.
  5. Fit the new bulb so its tabs sit in their slots, clip the hold-down wire back, and refit the rubber seal with an arrow facing up.
  6. Reconnect the plug, refit the fuse box or coolant tank, and test the light.

Bulb types are commonly H1 for the low beam and HB3 for the high beam, with W5W sidelights and PY21W front indicators — always confirm against the old bulb before buying.

Frequently asked questions

Why not touch the glass? Oil from your skin creates a hot spot that shortens bulb life. Clean any fingerprints with alcohol.

One side is dimmer or pink. Replace headlight bulbs in pairs so both sides match.
