Move the Shifter Out of Park (Shift-Lock Release)

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 6, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Honda CR-V Mk3 (RE) 2007-2012.

If the automatic Honda CR-V (RE, 2007-2012) will not shift out of Park — usually because of a flat battery or a fault — the shift-lock release lets you move the lever manually so the car can be rolled or towed.

Release the shift lock

The automatic selector; the shift-lock release slot is in the trim beside it.
  1. Set the parking brake firmly.
  2. Remove the key from the ignition.
  3. Lay a cloth on the edge of the shift-lock release slot cover beside the selector, and gently pry the cover off with a small flat screwdriver.
  4. Insert the key into the shift-lock release slot.
  5. Push down on the key while pressing the release button on the shift lever, and move the lever out of Park to N (neutral).
  6. Remove the key and refit the cover (notch to the right). Press the brake and restart the engine when able.

If you have to use the shift-lock release, the car has a fault (often the brake-light switch or a flat battery) — have it checked.

Frequently asked questions

Why won’t it come out of Park normally? The interlock needs battery power and a brake-pedal signal. A flat battery or faulty brake-light switch blocks it.

Is it safe to tow in neutral? For short distances with the ignition in the accessory position; for longer tows use a flatbed to protect the transmission.
