Jump-Start a Flat Battery

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 7, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Suzuki Ignis Mk3 (ATK) 2016-Present.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

If your Suzuki Ignis Mk3 (ATK, 2016–present) won’t crank and the dashboard is dim, a flat 12V battery is the usual cause. You can jump-start it from another 12V car with a set of jumper cables. The battery sits at the front-left of the engine bay under a red positive-terminal cover.

Before you start

Use only a 12-volt donor battery or pack. Park the cars close but not touching, switch both off, and apply both handbrakes. Keep sparks and flames away — a battery gives off flammable gas. Do not try to jump a battery that looks frozen or damaged.

How to jump-start the Ignis

Suzuki Ignis 12V battery in the engine bay with red positive terminal cover
The 12V battery sits front-left in the engine bay; lift the red cover for the positive terminal. (LHD car shown.)
  1. Lift the red cover on the Ignis battery’s positive (+) terminal.
  2. Connect one end of the red cable to the (+) terminal of the flat Ignis battery.
  3. Connect the other end of the red cable to the (+) terminal of the donor battery.
  4. Connect one end of the black cable to the (−) terminal of the donor battery.
  5. Connect the other end of the black cable to a bare, heavy metal point on the Ignis — such as an engine mounting bracket — not to the flat battery’s negative terminal. This keeps the final spark away from the battery.
  6. Start the donor car and let it run at a fast idle for a minute.
  7. Start the Ignis. Once it runs, remove the cables in the exact reverse order (black from the Ignis, black from the donor, red from the donor, red from the Ignis).
  8. Drive the Ignis for at least 20–30 minutes, or charge the battery, to put charge back in.

Important notes

Never connect the black cable directly to the flat battery’s negative terminal — connect it to bare engine metal to avoid igniting battery gas. Do not try to bump- or tow-start the car: it can damage the catalytic converter (and is not possible on CVT models).

On SHVS mild-hybrid Ignis models there is a small 12V lithium-ion battery as well as the normal 12V lead-acid battery. Always jump from and to the normal lead-acid battery in the engine bay, never the lithium-ion unit.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the Ignis battery? Front-left of the engine bay, with a red cover over the positive terminal.

Why connect the black clamp to the engine, not the battery? The last connection can spark; keeping it away from the battery avoids igniting the gas the battery gives off.

It still won’t start — now what? If it won’t crank with good cables and a strong donor, the battery may be dead or there’s another fault. Have the battery and charging system tested.

If the car cranks but won’t run, or a warning light stays on afterwards, look up the cause at autodtcs.com, or see our car won’t start diagnosis guide.
